2010/2011 Cape Times Emergence Series

Labelled “visionary” by John Battersby, UK Country Manager and Custodian of Brand South Africa, International Marketing Council of South Africa , and “most impressive” by Ian Goldin, Director of the 21st Century School, Oxford University, the Inaugural Feature in this Series, published in March 2010, examined two overarching themes and five global meta-trends that are set to revolutionise the way we work and do business in these postmodern times.

Other features in the Cape Times Emergence Series garnered comments such as “a powerful piece” from Peter Kidger, Marketing Director of Corobrik, “awesome writing” from Gary Ronald, Head of Public Affairs, AA, and “excellent work” from Byron Cormoran, CEO of Bidvest Bank. These features focussed on emerging trends in the Built Environment, Computer Technology and Automotive & Transport sectors.

The Series, which became a significant knowledge ecosystem in the Western Cape, was made possible by Carole’s attendance at international events such as the UNEP FI (Financial Initiative) Global Round Table, DIVERSITAS 2nd Open Science Conference, the 2010 Tech4Africa Conference and the UN World Water Conference 2011; global events that featured worldclass thought leadership.

    Independent Newspapers

Carole’s print media speciality is the big, prestigious, researched feature and as such she has written profiles on many of South Africa’s most eminent business and political leaders, notably the late international industrialist Dr Anton Rupert, past President Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and past President Thabo Mbeki , which were published across all major Independent Newspapers’ titles (combined readership 1 433 000 - AMPS 2006) (please see pdfs on past Presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki as examples).

Her work comprises a strong social responsibility component as seen in a double-broadsheet Wall Chart and Resource Guide on Drug Awareness for the Cape Argus published in July 2006.

It also focuses on environmental and sustainability issues as seen in her 2007/2008 Cape Argus Sustainability Series and 2009 Cape Times Sustainability Series which she conceptualised, researched, wrote and coordinated.

Together these two series went to an astounding 20 broadsheets in total.

Expo Zaragoza 2008

In April 2008 Carole was commissioned to conceptualise, research and write all the different media for the South African Pavilion for Expo Zaragoza 2008, an international water expo held in Zaragoza, Spain, from 14 June to 14 September 2008, which was dubbed the “biggest water festival on Earth”, at which 106 countries exhibited with 140 pavilions - please see www.zaragozaexpo2008.com .

South Africa, via the then Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) and Kagiso Exhibitions, pulled out all stops with a South African Pavilion of exceptional creativity and excellence - please see www.kagisoexpoct.co.za/zaraimages which shows the Pavilion during its construction phase.

The project proved to be an extremely challenging but fascinating commission due to the tight deadlines and the extent of the work which included three timelines, concepts and copy for nine huge backlit panels, a comprehensive touch screen system, a website and various print media. The website for the South African Pavilion is http://www.southafricapavilion2008.co.za/
